If you’re new here, welcome! I’m Mike, also known as ‘Mike the Mower’ as I have a keen interest in mowers and lawn care. I decided to use my lawn care experience to put together a website reviewing petrol lawnmowers, as there’s plenty to choose from on the market and felt buyers needed some guidance.
I’ve been using petrol mowers for nearly 20 years and know very well what makes a good mower. So this site will feature the best models on the market right now in 2023, and will detail the ins and outs of buying a new mower.
If you’re like me, you appreciate a well-cut lawn so I’ll only be featuring what I consider to be the best mowers you can buy, taking into account things like cutting height, engine performance, self-propelling etc.
Here is the list of petrol lawnmowers we have reviewed on this site. You can find bullet point reviews by clicking on each of the links in the table below, and summary reviews further down.

You might not have heard of this brand before, but Yard Force have made a lawnmower worth considering, not least because of the high performance and reliable Briggs & Stratton 125cc 300E engine it comes with.
We liked its striking gloss black deck and orange accents plus silver coloured wheels. Yes, it’s only a lawnmower at the end of the day but if you’re going to be out in the front garden mowing, your neighbours won’t fail to be impressed by the look of this mower.
The mower itself is lightweight giving excellent manoeuvrability but feels robustly built, with a steel deck and soft-grip handles.
There are 5 cutting depths, ranging from 25mm to 75mm to suit your mowing needs and can be set via a single lever.
There is a 7-day manned helpline should you have any questions or queries following purchase. It’s always nice to speak to someone at the end of the telephone if you do encounter an issue.
The orange coloured collection unit on the back of the mower has a capacity of 45 litres. This is less than other models but not a big issue.
Remember, this is a push mower and not self-propelled like other mowers we’ve reviewed here, but if you’re not particularly fussed about self-propelling, the Yard Force would make an ideal choice for your small to medium-sized lawn.
For added safety, the mower will stop the blade from spinning as soon as the handle is released. Good to know, especially if you have pets and children at home.
In the box, you’ll find the mower, grass collection bag and instruction manual.

If you want an easier life when mowing your lawn, this mower is model for you. Firstly, it’s self-propelled, with rear wheel drive, so no more push your mower along. Not only that, it has an electric start. Starting the mower is simple – just press the starter button and away you go.
Having an electric start does mean you need to keep the battery that powers the starter motor charged, but a charger is included. If however you forget to charge it, a recoil start is available as a fallback option.
This model is the baby brother of the HYM510SPE we also feature on this site. The cutting width is 18”/460mm so ideal for small to medium sized lawns. Top marks for the grass collection unit on the Hyundai – it comes with an impressive 70 litre capacity, so less stopping to empty the cuttings.
Adjusting the cutting height is made via a single central level and there are six different heights to choose from, ranging from 25mm to 75mm.
We particularly liked how this mower folds down for easy storage. The handles (with soft grips by the way) can be folded in seconds without the need for any tools.
If you have a medium to large lawn, then consider the bigger brother of this model, the HYM510SPE which you can read more about here, as it features a wider cutting width and more powerful engine.
For peace of mind, there’s also a 3 year Hyundai warranty included.
Finally, the engine is Euro 2 compliant which means it meets increased fuel efficiency and lower emission targets set by the EU.
[sc name=”Hyundai HYM460SPE 4-Stroke Petrol”]This Hyundai model is the bigger and more powerful version of the HYM460SPE we’ve also featured.
You might want to consider this mower over its baby brother if you need a larger cutting width and more powerful 173cc engine to cope with any slopes in your lawn.
The cutting width is an impressive 510mm and there’s a range of cutting depths from 25mm right up to 75mm over six settings. At the rear, there’s a 70 litre collection box but there also an option to mulch if you wish (mulching plug supplied).
Hyundai are generous with their warranties and this model is no different as it comes with a 3 year platinum warranty.
This is a self-propelled, single speed mower with rear-wheel drive, so no need to push it along. As with the other Hyundai model we’ve reviewed, this model comes with a convenient electric starter so starting the mower is simple and pain-free process. There’s also a recoil start as a backup if you forget to charge the starter battery.
Safety is also built into this mower as the blade with no rotate when the operator handle is released.
The underneath of the unit can be cleaned by connecting a garden hose to the deck while the mower is in use. Another nice feature from Hyundai.
In the box, you’ll find the mower unit, polyester grass bag, mulching plug, assembly tools and user manual.
It folds down in seconds without needing any tools and the engine is Euro 2 compliant which means it meets lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency targets set by the EU.
[sc name=”hyundai-hym510sp”]The Murray EQ500 lawnmower has a reliable and powerful Briggs and Stratton140cc 500E series petrol engine. This mower looks the part too, with an all black steel deck and handle.
It’s self propelled with a single set speed of 2.2 MPH.
If you like a range of cutting depths, then you won’t be disappointed. Cutting height can be adjusted from 28mm right up to 92, over 6 preset positions. Grass cuttings are collected by the large collection mesh bag which is 60L in capacity. There’s also the option to discharge cuttings back onto the lawn if you desire. As with the other mowers we’ve reviewed, this mower has a cutting width of 18”/460mm so it’s ideal for small to medium sized lawns.
The handle is ergonomically designed and can be adjusted in 3 heights for comfortable use. Storage isn’t an issue either as the Murray EQ500 can be folded down to save space.
There’s no electric start on this mower – instead there’s a prime and pull start. This involves pressing the primer button 3 times and then pulling the recoil start.
Overall, you’ll like this mower for its easy setup, easy start and feels solidly well built. For the price, it offer excellent value for a premium end self-propelled petrol mower.
[sc name=”Murray EQ500″]Side by side, the Honda Izy has the same features as many of the other mowers we’ve featured on this site. It’s self propelled and has an 18”/460mm cutting width. There’s a recoil start, steel deck and 55L capacity grass bag.
The Honda engine is 160cc so there’s plenty of power on tap to cope with slopes in your lawn if you have them.
Getting started and setup is easy – all you have to do upon delivery is to assemble the handle and fill the engine with the required amount of oil and petrol.
But there’s something extra the Izy has over other mowers – the feel of quality. It’s a mower that from the moment you grab the handle, feels like no other mower you’ve used before. There’s also a satisfying hum from the Honda engine as it cruises up and down your lawn.
Additionally, the Honda also provides the lowest cutting height we’ve seen from all the mowers we’ve reviewed – 10mm! So if you like your lawn to be as short as possible, take a serious look at this model.
